Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 7-12

Objective: The purpose of this study was to discover how the autonomous nervous system (ANS) responds to scuba diving with recreation parameters. Methods: The sample consisted of 20 scuba divers, 17 men and 3 women, who submitted to measurement in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. ANS activity was evaluated before diving (immersion) in water (depth of 20 meters) and 20 minutes after the dive (the total time under water was 43.3 ± 2.2 minutes) by means of spectral analysis (SA) of heart rate variability (HRV). HRV was measured during a standardized orthoclinostatic manoeuvre (three times 300 beats or three times 5 minutes) by means of Varcor...

Autonomic nervous system activity during acclimatization after rapid air travel across time zones: A case study

Michal Botek, Pavel Stejskal, Zbyněk Svozil

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 13-21

Background: The rapid transition across time zones also known as jet lag syndrome leads to desynchronization of our endogenous "biological" clock and causes a transient decrease in the adaptation capacity of an athlete. Objective: The aim of this study was to verify the use of the spectral analysis of heart rate variability (SA HRV) method as a tool for classification of the answer of the body to both the rapid transition across time zones and the training intensity level during the following acclimatization. Methods: Changes in autonomic activity were assessed by SA HRV during acclimatization after eastward (+6 hours) and westward...

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 23-31

Background: The effort to gain worldwide data on the levels of physical activity (PA) of different populations, which would be comparable, led to the creation and standardization of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Objective: The main goal of this study is to determine the variability of PA indicators of two equivalent forms of the Czech self administered format of the IPAQ questionnaire applied in a randomized sample of the Czech population between the years 2003-2006. Methods: A randomized sample of 11277 (5683 females and 5594 males) of the Czech population aged 15-69 took part in the study. The short...

Life satisfaction and the motivation to adopt physical activity in females of middle and late adulthood

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 33-42

Background: Among the key factors which influence the quality of experiences in middle and late adulthood are physical health and bodily changes. Females are tuned positively to introducing changes in lifestyle (incl. physical activity). The motivation to participate in physical activity is influenced by the way how women perceive themselves, especially in terms of bodily self perception. Objective: This study examines the associations between perceived life satisfaction, the type of individual set goals, and satisfaction with bodily self concept as related to physical activity. Methods: The study examined factors influencing...

Assessment of the influence of examination postures on postural stability by means of the DTP-3 diagnostic system

Peter D. C. Phiri, Jakub Krejčí, Jiří Salinger

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 43-52

Background: When examining spinal shape by means of radiographic methods, as well as non radiographic non invasive methods, standardisation of the examined person's posture is essential. Objective: Standardizing examination posture serves to enable the mutual comparison of the results from examinations when performed using different methods. Furthermore, a suitable examination posture should reduce postural sway and thus increase the reliability of such an examination. Methods: For the purpose of assessing the influence of fixation on reducing postural sway in a subject undergoing an examination, two examination postures with...

Sexual attitudes of personnel who work with individuals with intellectual disability

Jana Divišová-Brettová, Dana Štěrbová

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 53-58

The capacity, in the Czech Republic, for measuring attitudes towards this important aspect of a person's life is limited by the lack of an appropriate instrument. The aim of this study was to adapt the new instrument "Attitudes to Sexuality Questionnaire" (Cuskelly & Gilmore, 2007) and translate it into the Czech language. The purpose of this study was to examine, in the pilot study, the attitudes of schoolmasters toward the sexuality of persons with intellectual disability. From among Special Olympics participants, 20 persons (n = 20, 11 females and 9 males) were enrolled in this study. From the results it is apparent that respondents held positive...

Analysis of sport preferences among 13 - 21 years old youth with physical disabilities in Slovenia

Rajko Vute, Anita Goltnik Urnaut

Acta Univ. Palacki. Olomuc., Gymn. 2009 39(2): 59-71

The purpose of this study was to examine the sports preferences of physically disabled youth according to their attendance in physical education (P. E.) classes (twice a week) in schools, permanent exclusion, gender and usage of mobility aids. The sample consisted of 162 youngsters from Slovenia, 94 males and 68 females, from 13 to 21 years old with physical disabilities. Participants responded to the Sports Preferences List, SPL-86 (Vute, 1986) in individual and small group interviews. Data was gathered and completed during the period 2003-2006. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Chi-square statistics to provide new information. The level of statistical...
